Job shadow day at school

As my occupation I went to Garth Ranciers and learned very few of the tasks that beef producers need to know. My day started by waking up at 6:30 a.m. and set out to Killiam where Rancier Farms is located and then was there by 8 to begin work, my day ended at 5:00p.m.

Garth the “boss,” I worked for was very helpful with the things that we did and was there if I needed a hand with something he set me to work on. I think for sure I would like to work with him because we have a lot of the same similarities and enjoy the same stuff. The work environment isn’t much different then what I’m used to but it is nice to get out and see some ideas that other farmers have and how they run things around their place to help improve your farm. My schedule was a fun filled afternoon with taking pictures of cattle to help market bulls and sale females, and then we went out to the cattle runs where he was having troubles with the bulls breaking out so I rolled up 700 yards of barbed wire and strung out high tensile wire to put electric to stop the bulls from bothering it. We drove the quad used fencing pliers and electrical work with the fencer, also a tractor to feed cows and a camera for the top quality for pictures. You need to have an eye for cattle so that you know what angle to take the picture. Also need to know how to properly roll wire so it doesn’t blow apart and make a huge mess. The customers don’t com everyday just on certain days to look at bull prospects for next spring or your cow herd because they are interested in purchasing some. All the purebred Simmental breeds from across North America, Garth has been very successful and expanded down into the States with his quality breeding stock.

Yes I really enjoyed my day and got a really good experience with working at Garth’s. I would consider taking up farming for its fun and enjoyable now that prices are strong again. It was very worthwhile for me because I helped him get stuff done that he needed and liked doing it.

Belive it or not this was a school project and must say really the only useful thing i learned though school this year...
